KKM – Handweaving Society

The Kuru Kshetr Mandal (KKM) Handweaving Society in Dehradun, India, was founded in 1962 as a sanctuary and rehabilitation center for people affected by leprosy. Through the visionary leadership of an Indian bishop and German social worker Agnes Kunze, the community transformed into a thriving handweaving enterprise, providing dignity and purpose to its residents despite their physical limitations.
Recognizing that traditional handweaving could be performed even with compromised mobility, the founders equipped the community with spinning wheels and looms. This initiative not only provided meaningful employment but also created a supportive environment where residents received medical care, nutrition, and emotional support.

In winter 2024-25, I had the privilege of living within this remarkable community. While most of the original weavers have since retired, their legacy lives on in the form of stored handwoven cotton materials awaiting transformation. As a fashion designer, I embarked on a mission to honor their craftsmanship by creating contemporary, timeless designs for the European market. This project represents more than fashion – it’s a sustainable approach to supporting the community’s retired members, ensuring they can access essential healthcare and nutrition through the sale of these thoughtfully designed pieces.
